Praise for Brian G. Wood's THE ANALYST

"There are no vampires here, no werewolves rampaging over misty moors; these are monsters of grunge and filth. Monsters of true and real terror."

"Wood balances the graphic with the human with a delicate touch."

"This novel is hauntingly beautiful, with all the daring and originality of a young author starting his career and the considered, meticulously plotted scope of a seasoned middle-aged professional."

Another botched encounter gets Tom on the bad side of the Dry Ones, a coven of blood-drinking near-humans. Tom heads to their colony in New Orleans to plead his case before their barbaric court, and becomes embroiled in a brutal power struggle between the colony's two leaders pragmatic Judge Berenger, and bloodthirsty Archbishop Hatcher. Hosting the ancient demon known as Aki is taking its toll on Tom's new friend Keda, making the young medium increasingly unstable.

The deranged paranormal broker Harold Saldana still wants Aki back, and his influence still looms far from his base in Tokyo. All Tom wants is to get out of Louisiana in one recognizable piece, before he's turned into a Dry One himself.

The nightmares are back, showing Tom a terrible power that grows deep in the swamp...

EXCERPT
He tried in vain to find a point of navigation-- the North Star, or similar-- but the sky here was alien, and the stars followed no recognizable pattern. Even had he found something, dark clouds were coming in on a high wind. They shrouded the yellow eye of the moon, but did nothing to obscure its sick glow.

Another pound of thunder shook the trees. There was something lying on the ground in the distance. It was a skinless body, contorted and mutilated. It had to be George, he thought. He'd found his killer. No, that wasn't right-- the killer had found him.

There was a heavy shuffling up ahead. Tom ducked down behind a tree and did his best to hide in the grass. Sweat ran into his eyes, and coated his palms. He made sure he still had a good grip on his gun. When he saw what lumbered out of the yellow fog, his training kept him from dropping the firearm and running for his life, but he still wanted to.

It was like a massive, featherless bird. It took pendulous steps on muscular legs, having muddy human hands in place of feet. Atop its pot-bellied body, at the end of a swan-like neck, there was a person's head.

This person can write, so I was confused. This book wanders all over the place. The violence was just gore; the story did not hold together. By the end I didn't care about anyone. He has some great elements and the beginnings his own lore. I think what he needs is an editor. The story jumped around and I was lost a lot. I liked the first book so much I read this one to the end..... That time is lost to me forever. Needs a strong polish with an industrial strength grinder.

Blood Mother The Analyst vol 2 Volume 2 Brian Geoffrey Wood 9781482371314 Books Reviews

Blood Mother has a completely different feel and tone to it's predecessor. It is grittier and more fast paced. Not spoiling but there are also some really rough character developments.

The change in tone while maintaining the characters we came to like in the first novel, shows a lot of skill by Wood and I look forward to his future work.
Wood gets even better in this sequel to "Dead Roots". The pace is fast, the characters fantastic, the settings captivating, the prose terse and memorable. It improves upon its predecessor in every way that a good sequel should.

The most striking thing I noticed was that Wood's characters flesh out and mature significantly. They have a lot of really stupid addictions cigarettes, booze, pills (though some of those have use in their jobs), sex. But these things are never presented as anything other than childish crutches. These are broken people who turn to self-medication in order to deal with their horrific jobs, and the author makes highlights their struggles in a believable and heartbreaking fashion. They have a truly necessary job, but one that's not good for them as people, a contrast that I found moving and sometimes hit very close to home.

Looking forward to the third installment in this series. I could read a hundred of these. Top notch.
Let me put it this way with my busy schedule, it took me several months to get around to finishing Dead Roots. I finished Blood Mother in about two weeks.

Wood's writing is horror for my generation, for twenty-somethings who are sick to death of having Twilight and other uninspired teen fiction marketed towards them. Brian understands what we all crave, because he's right there with us. How many other horror novels can drop a tip of the hat to Metal Gear Solid while simultaneously freaking your s*** out? Not many, is my bet.

And while its content is certainly gruesome, twisted, and damn scary, there's a huge amount of character development. These aren't just throwaway no-names who get eaten by monsters. Tom, Margaret, Artie, and Keda -- and even the "NPCs," so to speak -- are fleshed out, with real problems, from addiction to heartache, from silly idiosyncrasies to bad habits. They're both brave and afraid, often simultaneously, and you don't want to see them hurt. It's really refreshing.

I am champing at the bit for part three. I seriously cannot wait.
Dead Roots was an amazing first novel. It's sparse and unforgiving world was populated with incredibly well-realised characters and a plot that drove the story along a unique and truly thrilling course. Blood Mother, the sequel to Dead Roots and the second book within the Analyst series, continues the trend and exceeds the brilliance of the first installment.

It is obvious that Wood learnt much after writing Dead Roots. The writing is much tighter and the author is more willing to take risks with his characters. Not content with completely ruining the central protagonist's life in Dead Roots, Wood forces Tom to (almost immediately in the continuity) deal with a situation far more traumatising, and far more dangerous. The intricate political workings of the novel's vampires recalls the very best vampire fiction, and the unique take on this classic monster (in terms of form and attitude) really sells the overarching plot. Wood clearly set out to bring a new kind of individuality to vampires as a race, and he has succeeded admirably. You won't find any Twilight garbage here - Wood's intent to scale back vampires in to creatures of pure menace is helped by descriptions of a vampires' true form that will leave you gagging.

Perhaps most astonishing is the change in pacing. While Dead Roots threw a lot of imagery at you very quickly, Blood Mother is much more content to let the story develop without relying on Thomas Bell's past experiences - or dream sequences - to fill in the gaps. This is in part because Wood established the characters so well in Dead Roots, but also because Blood Mother's writing is five to six steps up in quality from the first offering. The sense, whilst reading, that all of this drama and intrigue is leading to something utterly devastating in it's consequences is palpable.

I recommend this book if you enjoy the thriller and horror genres, but that doesn't mean that Blood Mother (and indeed, Dead Roots) won't appeal to fans of other genres. Readers are able to relate to the characters in a way that is usually expected from far more experienced writers, and this accessibility along with Wood's resolve to not pull any punches makes for an exciting, emotional and satisfying read for anyone.
Brian's first book in the series was a good start, and Blood Mother builds on that well. While the previous book showed us Tom's inner demons, and gave us an understanding of what he and the DPSD do, Blood Mother shows us how the continued stresses of his job erode Tom's control over himself and his relationships. As with Dead Roots (The Analyst), the characters in Blood Mother seem real, flawed and relatable; their successes, mistakes and interactions strongly presented throughout the investigation. Truly, an engrossing and enjoyable read.
very fast paced book; I read it in an evening. a good follow up to book one in the series. this sequel follows along where book one left off, and provides a little more insight into the characters background and underlying personalities and natures. this author does a great job creating full characters, that are incredibly relatable. now on to book 3.....
Great horror thriller
